To say that my fitness has been lacking recently would be a little bit of an understatement. Over the last couple of months I’ve really struggled with getting myself to the gym.
I think it’s so much easier to fit exercise into a structured lifestyle – when you have a certain time you can go and pump up the fitness – and with my currently very odd, unpredictable routine, it’s been tough to get back into the swing of things and actually get the motivation to get moving.
But hey ho, it’s human to fall off the bandwagon for a bit, and sometimes you need a break. Now I feel ready to fix a little fitness routine into my life again. Whilst the rest of the life is a bit up in air routine wise, I can still pick and choose days/times to work out at the start of each week and stick to it.
As with any new routine/life change, I find having a big clear out is a really great way to start afresh and move on. So that’s exactly what I’ve done with my gym bag – I’ve had a little clear out, and everything I need is in its own little compartment. So I thought I’d do a little post!
(disclaimer: this is actually an accurate photo of what’s in my tidy gym bag, but I will admit that if this was a ‘what’s in my handbag’ post it would just be a photo of receipts, a couple of chocolate wrappers, a heart made out of pipecleaners and fake blood I’ve forgotten to take out since Halloween…)
Here’s what I have in my gym bag!
The bag itself – is just a simple, dark purple Nike bag that I got from my nearest Sports Direct. It’s actually a pretty great shoulder bag with multiple zipped pockets (the best thing ever, am I right?!) and does the job well.
Gym clothes – probably the most likely, right? I actually buy my gym clothes from M&S – they’re cheaper than Nike etc. (though I love a bit of Nike!), yet they don’t skimp out on quality. They’re breathable, fashionable, and a bit more affordable – so a win win really.
Water bottle – another little buy from M&S, I love the colour of this and it adds a bit of fun. The stripes have a bit of grip on them so the bottle won’t slip out of your hand, and the straw compartment saves you from accidently missing your mouth while running and spilling water all over your front. Which totally hasn’t happened before.
Trainers – so these have a funny little story to them! I got them a few months before running the marathon earlier this year, and went to a little shop in Hove called ‘Run.’ If you’re in the Sussex area you have to go here for your trainer needs – the guy knows your shoe size just by looking at your feet, and then takes a video of them while you’re running so he knows which trainers your feet need. Like magic.
Gym key/card – needed to get me in to the gym, of course. The key is pretty great – every 6 weeks we talk to a trainer and get a new gym routine, and the key will log it all in/tell you what to do.
Bobby pins & a hairband – because who likes going to the gym after work and realising they forgot a hairband? No one! So I always have some spare just in case.
Shampoo & conditioner (body wash & deodrant too) – I get to go home and shower after the gym, but I like to wash my hair ASAP after swimming so usually wash it there and then! I got this coconutty pair at Bloggers Festival & I love them, they make my hair nice and glossy, as well as smelling a bit like a pina colada. The body wash I got from my lovely friend Carolin in Germany – it smells to heavenly and creamy.
A towel – bit self-explanatory, I’m sure!
Homemade protein shake (not pictured) – if I’m heading out straight after the gym I like to take a protein shake to fill up and get a little health kick. The recipe is here!
Weight gloves – Yep, I’m one of those people. I’ll be honest here, I don’t always use these as I do get a little bit embarrassed (I know I shouldn’t!), but they really do help keep my hands happy and healthy. These are really breathable and have great padding for even more support.
Spare socks – The same as the bobby pin fiasco, who likes heading to the gym after a day out and realising you don’t have appropriate socks?!
Goggles – I have a pretty good memory, but for some reason I always forget my goggles. Always. So now they’re just in there permanently.
And there you have it, that’s what I keep in my gym bag! Where do you like to buy your gym gear? Keep me posted!
